History of America
The history of America can be traced back to the arrival of Indigenous peoples on the continent thousands of years ago. European exploration and colonization began in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, with Christopher Columbus' expedition in 1492.
In 1607, the first permanent English settlement was established in Jamestown, Virginia. In 1776, the thirteen colonies declared their independence from British rule, leading to the Revolutionary War. The war ended with the Treaty of Paris in 1783, recognizing the new nation.
The United States Constitution was adopted in 1788 and the Bill of Rights were added in 1791. In the 19th century, the country expanded with the Louisiana Purchase, the Mexican-American War and the California Gold Rush. The Civil War, fought from 1861 to 1865, resulted in the abolition of slavery and the preservation of the Union.
The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw industrialization, immigration and the rise of the United States as a world power. In the mid-20th century, the country was involved in World War II and the Cold War, and experienced significant social and political changes with the Civil Rights Movement. The United States continues to play a dominant role in world affairs and is a leading economic and military power
